Raw feeding your dog is great all sizes, ages and breeds of dogs. It doesn’t matter if they have been dry food/kibble fed before, if they are young, old or anything else you can still switch.

Raw feeding is based on a calculation of your dog’s ideal weight. So when working out the daily requirement go on be honest could they do with losing an inch or two?

Most dogs are fed between 2% and 3% of their ideal adult weigh. Puppies are fed between 8-10%

It can be confusing so check out my guide to raw feeding your dog

There is no set amount to feed your dog

As with any food, some need more, some need less, so I constantly evaluate based on my dog’s body shape. I don’t weigh my dog’s (or myself!) I think it is based on shape and condition. But remember every dog is an individual.

The amount fed is not set in stone, if they are less active ie . extreme weather, injury, on rest, feed less, do not wait until they have put weight on. If they are having more exercise ie. an active holiday, feed abit more.

So a 25kg dog of the correct weight and of average exercise levels, I would start on 2.5% so this is 625g per day. If you feed twice please remember to split this amount.

Note: my collies are fed on 7% !! They are not working dogs but burn off calories easily!!!

My cavaliers are on 1.5% are they are prone to weight gain!!

How to switch your dog to raw food

Personally I do the straight switch, ie. Switch straight from last meal of kibble to raw. But you can introduce slowly, remember it’s your dog and your choice.

I always start by introducing one protein a week, so you can spot intolerances and allergies.

I monitor my dog based on their stools, white, hard, crumbly poo is a high bone content. Runny stools can be for a number of reasons,

This menu is based on using a complete (i.e. offal is included in the mince) I believe this is the best for beginner’s and later I will talk about diy meals.

Week 1

(based on a 25 kg adult dog of average activity)

625g of complete turkey per day, usually split into 2 meals

Day 2 & day 4 add 1 raw egg

Day 4 feed one turkey neck or wing

Week 2

Breakfast 312g complete beef mince

Dinner 312g complete turkey mince

As before feed 2 eggs on separate days in the week

Feed beef ribs on day 2 and turkey neck or wing on day 4

Week 3

As above but add oily fish eg. salmon, mackerel, sardines, sprats, trout, herring for 2 of the meals.

You may want to do half turkey half fish for both meals, ie. 156g turkey & 156g fish for both meals.

Some dogs will eat whole fish, some with only eat it minced.

Week 4

Breakfast 312g tripe mince

Dinner 312g complete turkey mince

As before feed 2 eggs on separate days in the week

Feed beef ribs on day 2 and turkey neck or wing on day 4

I have used turkey as the base in this diet, but if your dog does not tolerate turkey, use another meat. Infact any of the meats can be substituted, but the key to introducing raw feeding is not to rush! And this is a guide, any questions please ask.

I would continue adding chicken, lamb, duck, pork, rabbit, pigeon, game, the list is endless.

Signs of allergy/intolerance include:

  • digestive problems (gas, diarrhoea, vomiting)
  • itchy or oozing skin
  • red, irritated eyes
  • nasal discharge
  • coughing or sneezing
  • inflamed ears
  • swollen paw

But these can also be signs of detox when you are first transitioning, I would recommend trying the offending meat later on in the year.

The above diet will cost approx. £38 for a 25kg dog for 4 weeks (based on Durham animal feeds, at time of writing) £1.36 per day!!

But you will see

  • Healthier teeth ang gums
  • Healthier skin and coat
  • Boosted immune system
  • Improved digestion
  • Increased energy & concentration

I know this sounds like a faff and hard work, but honestly if you introduce slowly it makes long term feeding easier, I have 6 dogs and none react to any raw meat.

Reactions to cooked proteins, or proteins in kibble meals are completely different.

Note: my collies are fed on 7% !! They are not working dogs but burn off calories easily!!!

My cavaliers are on 1.5% are they are prone to weight gain!!
