I believe that whole salmon is better than feeding just the oil, why? Read on…
Benefits of salmon for dogs
Salmon is a highly nutritious protein for dogs, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that promote healthy skin, a shiny coat, and reduced joint inflammation.
It helps to support the immune system function, improves cognitive health, and is as an excellent, and salmon is an easily digestible alternative protein for dogs with allergies to chicken or beef.
Dried Salmon
Air-dried salmon is great and holds all the all nutritional values of fresh salmon for your pets.
Whole salmon is the complete fish, and while they contain very small bones these are needle-thin so are not a threat to your dog, and there is great nutrition in the heads and tails too.
But if you prefer, I have salmon skins available, full of great natural salmon oil aswell.
Can I feed fresh salmon to my dog?
Yes, but fresh salmon needs freezing for a minimum of 3 weeks before feeding, if feeding raw, due to the parasites on fresh fish! Don’t worry they are safe to feed after freezing.
Or you could buy them already frozen, they are fine to feed. They you can feed frozen, partially or fully defrosted.
Or you can buy fresh or frozen salmon for your dog and cook it for them.
Personally, I feed all my dogs a raw diet, if you want to know more see my blog here.
What about tinned salmon for dogs?
Yes, tinned salmon can be a great choice, it should be packed in water, not brine or oil, and plain without added salt or preservatives to avoid excess sodium in your dog’s diet.
Or why not buy tinned salmon that is specifically packed for your dog or other meat eating pets?
Did you know salmon oil can go off?
Yes salmon oil can go off, or rancid, usually when it has been store too long or stored incorrectly. Rancid salmon oil smells extra strong and fishy or rotten.
Rancid salmon oil can harm your pet’s health by causing oxidative stress, potentially leading to chronic diseases in pets and humans.
If you do want to use salmon oil, keep it cold, store in the fridge. Buy smaller bottles to limit air exposure and use within a couple of months. Keep it out of the light, dark glass bottles are better than clear plastic. And check the expiry date!
Also how has it been stored prior to you buying it?
