I’ll be the first to say it—I love a rescue dog. In fact, many of my own pack are adopted from
various situations. But as much as I’d love for every dog to find a home, I completely understand that not everyone can
adopt a new furry friend—and that’s okay!
The good news? There are still plenty of ways you can support pet rescues and charities
without adding another set of paws to your home. From donating to volunteering, your help
can make a huge difference to dogs in need. Here’s how!
1. Give a Helping Hand at Charity Events
One of my favourite ways to support local rescues is by getting involved in fundraising
events. Whether it’s a sponsored dog walk, a charity bake sale (dog-friendly bakes included,
of course!), or an adoption awareness day, these events help raise vital funds and spread
the word about the amazing work rescues do.
Many charities are always looking for volunteers to help out—so if you’ve got some free
time, why not lend a paw?

2. Donate Treats, Food & Supplies
While monetary donations are fantastic, rescues also rely on physical donations to keep tails
wagging. I love being able to donate delicious, natural dog treats to local rescues—it means
the dogs get a tasty, nutritious snack while they wait for their forever homes.
Many have amazon wishlists and I have wishlists for 2 of my favourite locals rescues here, Greyhound Gap Wishlist and Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre.
Other items that are always welcome include:
Dog food (wet & dry)
Beds & blankets (especially in winter!)
Toys & enrichment activities
Leads, collars & harnesses
Cleaning supplies (rescues go through A LOT of these!)
If you’ve got spare dog gear sitting around, why not check with your local rescue and see
what they need most?
3. Support Animal Charities Online
Not everyone has the time to volunteer in person, but you can still support from the comfort
of your sofa! Many rescues and charities have online donation options, whether it’s a one-
time contribution or a monthly sponsorship.
Some organisations even have wish lists on Amazon or pet supply stores, making it easy to
donate much-needed items with just a few clicks.
And don’t forget—you can support without spending a penny just by sharing rescue posts on
social media! The more eyes on a pup in need, the higher their chances of finding a loving
home.
4. Shop Small & Support Pet Charities at the Same Time
Did you know that some independent businesses (like us!) give back to pet charities? Many
small pet brands donate a portion of their profits to rescue organisations—so by shopping
handmade, natural, and local, you’re not only treating your dog to quality goodies, but
helping other pups in need too.
Look out for businesses that work with charities, and next time you’re stocking up on treats,
toys, or pet supplies, consider shopping with a company that gives back.
5. Sponsor a Rescue Dog
Can’t adopt? Why not sponsor a dog instead? Many rescues offer sponsorship programs,
where you can donate towards a specific dog’s care—helping to cover their food, vet bills,
and shelter costs until they find their forever family.
In return, you’ll often get updates, photos, and stories about your sponsored pup—so you
can be part of their journey, even from afar.
6. Foster (Even If It’s Just Short-Term!)
Okay, so this one technically involves bringing a dog home—but fostering is a great middle
ground if you’re not ready for a permanent commitment.
Many rescues urgently need short-term fosters for dogs recovering from surgery, nervous
pups who need socialisation, or just to free up space for more dogs in need. Even a few
weeks in a foster home can make a huge difference to a rescue dog’s confidence and
wellbeing.
If you’ve got the time, patience, and a little extra room, fostering could be one of the most
rewarding ways to help!
Every Little Bit Helps!
Supporting animal rescues isn’t just about adoption—it’s about showing up in whatever way
you can. Whether that’s donating treats, volunteering at an event, shopping small, or simply
sharing a rescue post, every little bit helps.
So next time you’re wondering how to make a difference for rescue dogs, remember—you
don’t need to adopt to change a pup’s life. You just need to lend a helping paw.
With love, wags, and a whole lot of tail-chasing excitement,
